Choosing a Glass Garage Door

1. Frame Thickness

Typically, the longer or taller the door, the larger the frames are needed. Most manufacturers create frames from 1 ¾”, 2”, or 3” thick. However, wind-load glass doors will require thicker frames and structural supports called struts. In addition to support options, your frames can also be insulated. Between the aluminum frames, manufacturers can insert various layers of insulation to help your door provide more energy efficiency for your home or business.

2. Frame Color

Clear anodized aluminum is the standard color to start with for your garage door. This clean, metallic look is popular and presents a modern finish. Standard glass is ⅛ DSB, but we only install ⅛ tempered glass due to safety concerns with DSB. When it comes to the thickness of glass, you can choose many different options. The most popular are ⅛ and ¼, but we offer double pain 7/16” or ⅝” and even 1” but that is very rare. You can select your glass thickness based on the area you live in and whether or not you have active children. Although these thick glass pieces are difficult to break, accidents do happen. However, the replacement options are easy and affordable. A garage door technician can simply remove the broken piece from the frame and replace it with a new one. 4. Glass Options

In addition to glass thickness, you can get different appearances as well. This aspect of your glass garage door design offers you the most customization choices from the type of glass to color and texture. For example, if you do not like clear glass for privacy reasons, you can get tinted, frosted, acid-etched, or mirror glass. If you worry about glass breakage, you can get an impact-rated glass at a slightly higher rate. If you can’t choose between clear or frosted glass, we can install a system that switches between the two by remote control. 5. Track Type

In terms of your track radius, glass garage doors can function on a standard 15″ radius or be fitted for low headroom or high lift. Low headroom allows you to frame your garage door comfortably even with low ceilings.
